Epson, the color-printer people (at least here in the U.S.), released their entry into the netbook market which is simply called the “Epson C.” (The photos say “Endeavor” on the screen and the case, so perhaps it’s a holdover from the prototype?) Available in Japan for €380 ($479 USD) you get exactly what you might expect:

  • 10.2-inch LCD with WSVGA resolution
  • Atom N270 CPU
  • 1GB RAM
  • 160GB HDD
  • Intel 945GSE Express Chipset
  • USB 2.0
  • WiFi
  • 1.28kg (2.82 pounds)

No word yet on whether this netbook will be available in the U.S.

Since we all know that I’m power hungry, here’s a product that I can embrace.

Expansys has been offering a spare battery charger for the Eee PC 701 since earlier this year and will soon be expanding its line of Eee PC battery charging adapters to include the Eee PC 900, Eee PC 901 and 1000 series netbooks.

The Eee PC 701 model costs $41, while the 901/1000 will go for $53.99 and the Eee PC 900 series charger for $70.99.

$758 for a netbook? What is Dell thinking?

OK, you don’t have to pay that much.

For $209 less ($549) you can get the same 12-inch display, a 1.33GHz Atom processor, 1GB of memory, 40GB hard drive and a 3-cell battery. If your consumer confidence rating is high, you can upgrade to a 1.6GHz Atom processor, 80GB hard drive and a 6 cell battery.

These machines ship with Vista Home Basic - not XP - and if you order now, they should arrive before you turn the lights on your tree (or Menorah).

ARM to enter growing netbook market

ARM LogoNot to be outdone by Intel (and soon AMD)ARM has told Laptop Magazine they intend to enter the netbook market.

If you’re used to seeing ARM processors on the spec sheets for your smartphone or PDA, you’d be right - that’s primarily where they play, primarily due to their low power consumption. With that in mind, how hard could it be for them to produce a netbook that sips power and runs all day on a 3 or 6-cell battery? Probably not that hard, especially with a version of Ubuntu that the company says will be optimized to run on their processors.

DealBook: Best Buy cuts Eee PC 900A to $279.99

900a-279

Last week we noted that Best Buy had reduced the price of the MSI Wind U100 to $349 and NewEgg did the same for the comparably equipped Acer Aspire One.

Now, Best Buy has cut the price of the Eee PC 900A to $279.99, meaning you can pick up a netbook with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a 4GB SSD for under $300. OK, it runs Xandros Linux, but there’s no reason you couldn’t install Ubuntu.
